SALTVILLE, Va. Norma Jean "Trixie" Davidson Marsh Woodward, 75, passed away at her home surrounded by her family and friends on May 2, 2018. Trixie was a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church. She began her lifelong nursing career in Roanoke where she received her diploma in nursing at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in 1964. She held various positions in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and People Incorporated in Meadowview, Va., until she found her true calling, working with individuals with serious mental illness at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute. She was hired at SWVMHI in 1979 as an RN Clinician A on the Acute Admissions Unit, where she supervised nurses and psychiatric care techs and served as an important link to the other clinical team members. She was promoted to an RN Clinician B in 1989, serving as House Supervisor for the entire facility on day shift. Norma served in that role until 1999 when she became Unit Nurse Coordinator on the Extended Rehabilitative Services Unit at SWVMHI. She retired with more than 27 years of service in 2006. Trixie earned her certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse in 1995 and served as mentor to countless nurses, techs, psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists during her time with the state hospital. She had a way of encouraging the most discouraged and ill individuals and she always saw the humanity first in the people she served and not the fact of their illness or symptom. Her patients instinctively knew that they could trust her, that she always had their best interests at heart, and that she could diffuse any tough situation or cheer anyone up with her unique brand of humor. Trixie was preceded in death by her parents, Harve and Leona Davidson; and brother, Johnny Wayne Davidson. She is survived by her husband, Billy Woodward; son, Trey Carr and wife, Angela; step-son, Bryan Woodward; sister, Anne Duncan and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Bryce and Mackenzie Carr; and step-granddaughter, Tawni Woodward. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday May 5, 2018, at the Madam Russell United Methodist Church in Saltville with Pastor Tim Best officiating. The burial will follow in the Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Springs, Va. The family will be receiving friends from 12 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
