Betty Joe Carmack Reid, 84, slipped away at Baylor All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. She had been ill, suffering with pulmonary fibrosis.

The Carmack family were early settlers of the Murray community in Young County. The family farmed and ranched, and later built a homestead in Throckmorton County.

Betty graduated from Woodson High School in 1946, and attended Tarleton State University. She later married and had two children, LeAnn and Stephen. After a divorce, she received her bachelor's degree in education at North Texas State University in 1968.

Her first teaching job was in Fort Stockton. She spent eight years in West Texas and then moved back to Graham and taught school for 24 years.

After retirement from the Graham ISD in May of 1992, she enjoyed volunteering for many community organizations, including Graham Family Advocacy Center, Meals on Wheels, Graham Hospital Auxiliary, Young County Historical Commission and Old Post Office Museum and Art Center. She received many honors for her volunteer work, including the Daffodil Festival in 1993 and the Chamber of Commerce award for Citizen of the Year. She was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ.

In late 2008, Betty moved to Fort Worth with her daughter and two cats, TomBob and Tubby. Before her illness, Betty enjoyed attending church at Western Hills United Methodist Church and volunteering for the Tarrant County Democratic Party. She was proud to see the first African-American President elected of the United States.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved parents, Lee and Hattie Carmack; her dear sister, Nancy Lee Carmack; brother-in-law, Don Sims; and her precious niece, Nancy Kay Sims Redman.

Survived by her two children, a loving caregiver and daughter LeAnn Lewis of Fort Worth and loving son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Tonya Reid, of Odessa; two dear grandchildren and their spouses, Gwendy and Scott Everitt and Russell and Felecia Reid of Odessa; four darling great-grandchildren, wonderful nephews, dear nieces and lots of lovely cousins, one of whom was very special, more like a beloved sister \emdash Alene Ragland of Graham.
