Irene Ferree grew up in McDowell County, West Virginia with her three sisters and one half sister. Her mother, Nora Caldwell Ferree Wade supported the family after the death of Irene's father, Samuel Eurye Ferree, who was originally from Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. For a while the family's poverty became so acute that Irene lived for 4 years in Galax, Virginia, with the Felts family who owned the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency.
Irene graduated from Marshall College and taught first grade at Hemphill School in McDowell County, West Virginia, for 20 years. On 3 June 1927 she married Samuel Davidson Harris of Bedford, Virginia, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke, Virginia. Samuel was a pharmacist who eventually became the owner of the Citizen's Drug Store in Welch, West Virginia. After retiring from teaching, Irene helped her husband manage the drug store. In 1985 she died of lung cancer while visiting her niece in Ocala, Florida.
