From SAR application of Mack Edwin Lazear
Death date from pension application
Pension Application, type written summary attached:
David Gentry, Widow's file 7511, was allowed pension on an application executed February 11, 1834, at which time he was eighty years of age (date and place of birth not stated) and a resident of Jackson County, Tennessee. He stated that he enlisted in Bedford County, Virginia., in 1780, and served for more than two years under Captains James Lewis and William Griffin, Colonels Cleveland and Andersen, in the North Carolina troops and was in the battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens. It is furhter alleged that he married in Bedford County, North Carolina, May 12, 1807, Sara Johnson her maidem. He died in Overton County, Tennessee, July 16, 1847, and his widow was allowed a pension on an application executed April 11, 1853, at which time she was eighty years of age and a resident of Jackson County, Tennessee.
Note: One letter lists Anson County, South Carolina as place of marriage and says Roberts was her maidem name, and lists David's death date as July 19, 1846. Strange. (p675)
From ancestry:
David was most likely born in Virginia, either Louisa or Lunenburg County. There's little doubt that David's father was one of Samuel Gentry's (1692-1779) sons. Most likely David's father was Nathaniel Gentry, 1730-1810, of Hanover Co., VA. David was married twice. His first wife's name is uncertain, but was no doubt the mother of David's first son Jesse. David served in the Revolutionary War under Capt. James Lewis and William Griffin. His service took him to Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The most notable battle he served in was the Battle of Kings Mountain/Cowpens. His years immediatley after service are uncertain. It seems that he may have stopped back in Virgina briefly before venturing toward the North Carolina/Tennessee border. His first wife must have died around 1800. The first record of David in Tennessee is in the 1802 Jackson Co., tax list. He married his second wife, Sarah Johnson/Roberts, by 1807 and remained in Jackson Co. for the next few decades. In 1834 he applied for a pension, which is where a lot of information about his military life can be found. His wife, Sarah, testified that David died in 1846 or 1847, making his age at death nearly 100 years old. This is probably true since David is found in census records as late as 1840. He probably died at his son, David Jr's, home in Overton Co. He may have been buried there or at the near by Thomas Gentry cemetery in Jackson Co., where many of his direct descendants, and second wife Sarah, are buried with unmarked stones.
General Notes: Wife - Eliza J Smith
From SAR application of Mack Edwin Lazear
The name of this first wife is aooarently obtained from a family tree written oin the back of a portrait of granddaughter Elizabeth.
