Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Of Interest to Many Tipton County People.
Versailles, Ind. July 10-The leading social event of the week in Ripley county was the reunion of the Holman family, and the celebration of the golden wedding anniversary of the marriage of Washington Holman, and Martha Ann Grishaw, on July 10, 1853. Of the number of guests present at that wedding 50 years ago there is only living yet and that one was present at the celebration today, we mean Franta Grishay, who was then a child of less than 4 years of age, Washington Holman was born on Jan 30, 1822.
Mrs. Martha Holman was born on Nov. 12, 1829. They were both born, married and have always lived within one mile of where they live at present.
Mr. Holman was first married to in 1844 to Nancy Mahoney. To this union were born five children, two of which with their mother died while young. The survivors from that marriage are Ben F. Holman, of Sharpsville; America Holman, who is well known in Tipton county, and Oliver Holman, who has lived in the Indian Territory for the past 25 years.
Martha Anna Holman, taught the first school ever taught in Sharpsville. In October, 1850, she went to Tipton county to keep house for her brother, Washington Grishaw. She remained there for a little more than two years. Pages might be written describing Tipton county at that early date and yet the change has been so great the reader would hardly realize that it is possible. Soon after her return she was married to Washington Holman. To this union were born eleven children, eight of whom are yet living and were present today. They are John Calvin Holman, of Tipton; Luther and Freeman Holman, of near Correct; Geo. Holman of Kokomo; Mrs. Flo Finley and Ella Camren, of Sharpsville; Mrs. Della Ernest, of Hoopeston, Illinois; and Mrs. Jennie Gookins, who lives at the old homestead. Also 42 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren are living monuments to that marriage of 50 years ago.
The old homestead is a beautiful country residence, located on the brow of a small hill which is surrounded by a cluster of larger hills, that presents a beautiful landscape view. The good old spring near the house is still doing service and its water is just as clear and cool as it was when the writer drank from it last just 16 years ago.
The natural scenery along the narrow lane which leads up to the house still holds its own. It is about the only place that looks exactly as it used to look to your scribe. Even the hills appear much higher and grander than they did before. The old orchard at the rear of the house and the pear orchard on the east of the lane show the evidence of age more than any other objects which surround the house. This is the same homestead which was entered by Mr. Holman's father, nearly one century ago. At about 8 o'clock the friends and relatives began to arrive...[the clipping is torn here]...The interior of the house was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The table was loaded with all the delicacies of the season and was arranged as only Ripley county hospitality could arrange it. Its contents were highly appreciated by all present. After dinner the visitors were again divided in groups parts of which listened to music, part engaged in games, and all enjoyed themselves because they were present.
The following is a list of the presents given: J.C. Holman and wife, gold $20. Freeman Holman and wife $5. H.E. Cameron and wife $5. Chas. Earnest and wife, $2. Geo. Holman, $5. Luther Holman and wife $2.50. Franta Grishaw, $5. Mrs. Jennie Gookins, cash $2.50. Sarah McClure, $1. Thos. Wooley and wife, gold cream ladle. Jas. Harper and wife, gold berry spoon. A.A. Holman, mush and milk bowl. Chas Ray and wife, tea cups and saucers. John Livingston and wife, set napkins. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poulter, suspenders and velvet slippers. Mrs. Poulter, fruit dish. Nancy Horton, fruit dish. Mrs. Rockey, cushion cover. Mrs. Seth, broom. A.M. Wooley, shirt. Mrs. A.M. Wooley, dress. Mrs. Flo Finley, rug. R.A. Leavitt, Sub. Sharpsville Record.
The subjects of this sketch Mr. and Mrs. Holman, are among the most highly respected and honored people of Ripley county. They have raised a large family of children, all of which have filled prominent places in society, church, and state.
Calvin Holman, is at present filling the second term as treasurer of Tipton county, an office which he has filled with great credit.
Freeman Holman, who was formerly trustee of the township in which he lives, is at present representative of Ripley county, in the state Legislature.
One of the interesting parts of the day was when the lady photographers of Versailles, Mrs. Howell and Miss Jula Spencer, arrived to photograph the crowd. Every body then looked pleasant and quiet for a moment and we know that the picture will be an object of art. Late in the evening when the good byes well [were] being said all complimented Mr. and Mrs. Holman, for the royal way they had been entertained and all unite in wishing that many happy days may yet be added to their happy old age.
The following were present: Uncle Milt Wooley who is 83, being the oldest present, J.C. Holman, wife and daughter Blanch, Luther Holman, wife and family, Freeman Holman, wife and son Glenn, Geo. Holman and children, Sarah McClure and daughter Katie, H.E. Cameron and wife, Chas. Ernst and wife, Jennie Gookins and family, Tom Wooley and wife, Francis Grishaw, Mrs. R. Stenmark and daughter, Mr. Fox and wife, Wm. S Holman and wife, Chas. Ray and wife, Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Mary Jackson, who was the oldest lady present, Alfred Wooley, wife and family, Mrs. Lydia Hostetler, Geo. Titus and wife, Monta Risk, Ola Cochran and son Buhl, Leo Wooley and children, R.A. Leavitt, Marion Shaw and family, John Rockey and family, Mrs. Seth, Ella Poulter, Mrs. Minerva Poulter, Mrs. Wm. Finley, Miss America Holman, Tom Wooley and wife, John Livingston and wife, Mrs. Wm. Leslie, Mr. Wm. Gookins.

G. W. Holman married Martha Ann Grishaw July 10, 1853 in Ripley County, Indiana.
Martha Ann Grishaw born in Ripley County, Ind. Nov. 12, 1829 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H, Cameron in Sharpsville, Ind. aged 94 years. She was buried in the Sharpsville cemetery beside her mother, Mrs. Mary Copeland Grishaw, one of the earliest burials in the cemetery. Her father was Isaac Grishaw, a native of Garrett County, Kentucky and her mother Mary Copeland who came from Virginia. Her grandfather Isaac Grishaw came from England, he being the only son of a large family of Grishaws who came to America from that country and the name of Grishaw in this country comes from this son. Isaac Grishaw was the parent tree, if there are any other Grishaws in this country from another descendant, the fact is not known.

Mrs. Holman knew but little concerning the Copeland side of her family, her grandparents on the Copeland side died while Mrs. Holman was a small child.

There were ten children in her father's family, she being the youngest. The following brothers lived and died in Tipton County, Indiana, Washington Grishaw, Madison Grishaw, and John W. Grishaw. She came with her brothers to Tipton County in 1850 and taught school at Sharpsville as early as 1852. She lived in Ripley County until the death of Mr. Holman Nov. 9, 1906 then lived in Tipton County with her children. Of the eleven children born to George Washington and Martha Ann Grishaw Holman three died in infancy. The next to die was a son J. C. Holman who died Feb. 23, 1920. During her advanced years she was remarkably well preserved and her faculties were exceptionally keen. She was an interesting and intellligent lady and her companionship was most enjoyable.
Children of George W. and Martha A. Holman were:
1)Calvin Holman born in Ripley Co. Ind. April 19, 1854 and died in Feb.1920
2)Luther Holman born in Ripley County, Ind. Dec. 14, 1857
