Charlie Mitchell came to Kansas looking for work after the Civil war ans went to work for Achillas B. Wade on his farm. Charlie fell in love at first sight with A.B.s daughter, Mary Ann Wade. Her mother, Nancy Davidson Wade, had lost a shoe while riding home from sitting up all night with a sick friend. Mary was sent to look for the shoe and Charlie saw her - bare-headed, long dark hair flying behind her as she galloped by on the back of her pony. They married a year later.
At outbreak of civil war, Charles enlisted in company D, 15th Illinois Infantry organized at Marengo in 1861. Participated under General Shermans command in march to sea.

Mrs Mary Wade Mitchell of Rookford, I11., one of the first children born in Lawrence, is here to attend the Old Home Week festivities. Mrs Mitchell is the oldest child of Mrs Nancy Wade who died recently, was a member of the first party which came to Lawrenee.
Mrs Mitchell wants to see Law-rence at her beet, as she will be in her celebration next week.
