From article, Early CANDLERs of Virginia, By Ed Marsh, APR 1999:
Among Daniel's (Candler) neighbors in the late 1750's were Joseph Anthony,
John Lynch, Charles Lynch, Jr., Charles Caffrey, Sr., and sons John and
William Candler. I infer from the grant of 1755 that Daniel Candler was
not affluent, certainly not compared to his neighbors.
Daniel's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Caffrey sometime prior to
1758 (when Quaker records show "Elizabeth Caffrey" being received into
membership).

From Sue Elfving:
John Caffrey Sr did have a daughter Sally and she married John Hunter, per chancery records. The Anny Lea mentioned in John Caffrey's will was the d/o of John Caffrey's wife Elizabeth by a first husband. This proven by a copy of a letter written in 1828 letter (image 22-23) wherein Eliner KINGTON (d/o of John) states that "Biram Lay's mother was one of my mother's first children and when my Father died he let mothers a child's part." So I assume they are speaking of the Anney Lea who received a 40 shillings legacy from John Caffrey and who also stated she (Anney) had already received her legacy years ago from the executrix...and has no further interest."This would indicate that John CAFFREY's wife was married to someone else first and had at least one child Ann(ey), maybe others. This Anney was probably born by 1780 or earlier since John Caffrey's other children were getting married by 1800 or possibly a little earlier.

My G-grandfather was Thomas Talbott Davidson son of John Caffrey (or census written Coffrey)Davidson and Sophia Talbott Davidson. Thomas Talbott was named for G-G-Grandfather's best friend Thomas Hopkins and Talbott for G-G-Grandmother's maiden name. Sophia & John had been married in Warren County, Mo. They did move to Kansas.
Caffrey was the maiden name of John Caffrey Davidson's Mother (my G-G-G-Grandmother).
Our family story (according to interview of my mother with her Grandfather Thomas Talbott Davidson) was Thomas Hopkins & John C. Davidson had married Talbott sisters.
John C. Davidson & Thomas Hopkins came to Kansas and homesteaded in 1853-4. They had adjacent homesteads near Pleasant Grove, KS outside of Lawrence.

Thomas Hopkins Jr., immigrated to Lawrence County, Kansas in 1854, moving his young growing family there in 1855.
Thomas was involved in the antislavery politics which lead him to be involved in what was known as "Bleeding Kansas".
"Bleeding Kansas" (1854-59) was a small Civil war in the United States, fought between proslavery and antislavery advocates for control of the new territory of Kansas under the doctrine of popular sovereighnty.
Tensions were running high and elections were being held. Both pro- and antislavery extremists began recruiting pioneers for Kansas to weight the voting list. While the prospect of turmoil deterred most would-be settlers, 5,000 armed Missourians stormed in for the first election in 1855, seized polling and installed a legislature that made even antislavery talk of crime. Next, an unknown assassin shot a proslavery sheriff visiting in the antislavery town of Lawrence. To avenge this act, 800 Southerners rode in and laid waste to the community.
The events led to such loud outcries of fraud that they reached even the ears of Washington, D.C. On March 19, 1856, The House of Representatives appointed a special committee to investigate the "Troubles In Kansas".
Thomas Hopkins Jr., testified before this committee.

Mar 16, 1784, Coffery, Barnard & Agnes Jennings (d of Wm)See notes under Charles Caffrey Sr.
"As mentioned before, Charles, born 1756, second son of John Caffery, Constable of Bedford and pioneer married Dec. 10, 1786, Rebeka Carter, daughter of Merriwether Carter and Frances Leftwich, daughter of Augustine Leftwich. This marriage is recorded in the Quaker Archives of Virginia. The children of this alliance were all girls. Afterwards they intermarried with the Leftwichs. These descendants are the only known Caffery descendants still living in Virginia. They are listed in chart shown in appendix.
A second marriage of Charles is recorded in Campbel County, August 6, 1799. Nothing is known of their descendants.
Barnabus, for some unknown reason, called William, in his father's Will of 1790, married March 16, 1784, in Amelia County, Agnes Jennings, daughter of William Jennings. There is no question of the authenticity of Barnabus or his name. He was known as such in the old Barnabus Caffery Bible, still in the possession of the Thomas Family of Bedford. Cousin Geils, in a letter dated 1924, to Bethia Caffery, quotes from the Caffery Bible as follows:
Charles Caffery, born Oct. 1758
Barnabus Caffery, born Nov. 31, 1759
Juliette Caffery, born 1789 (she is a daughter of Barnabus. Note from Geils Thomas)
Nancy Caffery, born 1787 (another daughter of Barnabus).
At the present, the history of Barnabus is shadowy. He has been located in South Carolina. He did not go to Tennessee with Captain John, but he did go to Kentucky and remained there for some years."
