Excerpt from letter from Tami Galatro:

Pearl Della Davidson's husband was old and ill. He died before the children
were raised. Wayne, my grandfather who was born in 1919, only went to
school for one month. He hunted for food. He worked loading docks at a
feed lot when he was only 9 years old. When he turned 15 he started driving
a chicken truck with his brother, Raymond, who was only 16. They ran from
Arkansas, down to Louisianna and back up to Chicago. Wayne was running on
his own when he was 16. He drove truck for 15 years. During this, he taught
himself to read so that he could fill out his bills of lading, and taught
himself enough math to know whether or not he was being paid enough. The
first 4 years he sent home what he made to support his mother and younger
sister and brothers. Wayne married Velma Weeks in Arkansas when he was 19
and she was 18. He and his brothers were very wild at the time. In time
they all settled down and became respectable citizens :) Wayne and Velma
moved to California during WW2. With them came Pearl and her husband,
Velma's mother and her brothers and sisters. Wayne and Velma helped to
raise his youngest brother, James Clifford, and Velmas two youngest sisters.

He loved a good hunting hound. Wayne began driving a chicken truck from Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois, at age 15. He was a truck driver for about 15 years. He owned a car repair shop inMc Farland, California, for several years, then moved to California's central coast, where he owned a service station with his brother Glenn. He was the mechanic. In 1977 Wayne and Glenn bought a station in Templeton, California. They remained in the Templeton area until 1988. Wayne retired from the mechanic business, sold his home, and moved to Henderson Nevada. He worked as head porter at the Rail Road Pass Casino until just months before his death in November 1999.

When he turned 15 he started driving

they all settled down and became respectable citizens :) Wayne and Velma
moved to California during WW2. With them came Pearl and her husband,
Velma's mother and her brothers and sisters. Wayne and Velma helped to
raise his youngest brother, James Clifford, and Velmas two youngest sisters.

They had 3 children of their own, then they raised me. Wayne became a
mechanic in McFarland California, he moved to San Luis Obispo where he had a
service station for 15 years, then he went to Templeton and had a service
station for 10 years. He retired in 1989 and moved to Henderson, Nevada,
where he found that he couldn't stay still, (these boys invented
hyperactive!) He worked until just a couple of months before his death,
last November. Dad had the biggest hands that I have ever seen. His
wedding ring was a size 16! he was only 6" tall, but built like a prize
fighter. He loved to hunt. In San Luis Obispo County, he worked friday
nights as a bounty hunter. The ranches and wineries paid him to thin the
population of racoons and bobcats. Not politically correct, but that was
him. At 70 years old he was still running up and down hills about 10 miles,
every friday night, chasing hounds. He never met a stranger. He helped so
many guys that went to Cal Poly in SLO. When college students worked for
him, they were automatically part of our family. They were of course away
from home, and he just became a second dad for them. We still are close to
one of his "college boys" from the 1960's. He credited Dad for helping him
stay in college when he was so homesick that he couldn't stand it.

This big man, with no formal education, didn't like to buy cards for
Velma...they didn't say enough for him. He bought a type writer and would
compose poems for me to type for him, put them in pretty paper and that was
his way. I have tried to explain Wayne Coberly, son of Pearl Della Davidson
and grandson of John R. Davidson. He is the easiest of the family for me to
explain since I grew up with him. He is also the hardest to explain, he was
such a contridiction in so many ways. If he ever had an enemy, our family
never knew about them. Even his brothers-in-law, on both sides, looked to
him for leadership when they were in times of trouble.

The family did stay in Arkansas until about 1942/43...Wayne and Velma's
oldest, Connie Carol, was born in Arkansas, their second child, Eddie Wayne,
was born in Woodlake, California in 1944, and their youngest, Rickie Lynn
was born in McFarland. I am the daughter of Eddie Wayne.

Quick review of Campbell County tithes - David Davidson
David shows up in 1789, 1791, 1792, 1793, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1797, 1798 (with an extra tithe), 1799 (with extra tithe), 1800 (two extra tithes). The lost tithe in 1801 I am assuming is John who married Polly Caffery in 1803. 1802, 1803 & 1804, David has 1 additional tithes, and loses one tithe in 1805. Candidate son: A Samuel,"son of David", appears next to David in 1804 - assuming he lost and added a tithe the same year.. In 1805, David has lost a tithe. Candidate son: David Davidson Jr who shows up in 1806 next to David and Sam.

Note: This David could be the oldest son of William and Martha (Baker) Davidson,of Botetourt Co., VA, who moved over to Campbell Co., VA around 1789. I have previously assumed that David's children were those who had Charles Caffery as bondsman, with the assumption that David was dead or living elsewhere after 1806. Custom seemed to have father sign as bondsman…but these children may simply have been over 21 and not required fathers signature. In 1807, only one David is back with an extra tithe. Here, I am assuming this is David Sr., but could be David Jr, David Sr having passed away. (1808 list not available) In 1809, loses tithe. Candidate son: An Allen shows up in 1810 next to Joseph. In 1810, tithe is back. In 1811, tithe is gone. Candidate son: Young appears for the first time, next to David and David Jr. in 1811. (Young married in 1813.) A David appears in 1812, 1813 and 1814.

It is possible that David died about 1806.

Possible sons of David, from tithe records:
John appears in 1801, born about 1782.
Samuel appears in 1804, b about 1783.
David Jr appears in 1806, b about 1784.
Allen appears in 1810 (not confident is David's son), b about 1794.
Young appears in 1811, b about 1794.

Margaret, John, and Samuel are shown as children of David, with no real positive proof. (although tithe records do suggest a son Samuel) Logic is as follows:

Nancy Davidson, who married Charles Caffery, is a definite daughter of a James. She could be the daughter of the elder James, although I show her as daughter of James who married Janet Cockrane. Charles Cafferey who was associated with other Nargaret, Johns and David's marriages. Yet at the time, James and Joseph were bondsman and witnesses for other Davidson members.
-MARGARET DAVIDSON married HENRY Godey Sept 29, 1810 (married by Samuel D) Charles Caffrey (James son-in-law) was bondsman, a John D was witness,)
-JOHN DAVIDSON married POLLY CAFFERY 13 January 1803 Campbell, Charles Caffery & John Thomas witness)
- SAMUEL DAVIDSON married ELENDER LEA 2-14-1807 Gideon Lea, father of the bride, Samuel and Charles Coffey were bondsmen .Charles Coffey witness.Looking thru Internet treesElender Lea€™s mother was Sally Ann Caffery. John Caffrey's will, Campbell Co., Va filed Oct 7, 1790 shows a Charles and Sally, so I assume they are brother and sister.

Perhaps David died and Charles stepped in to provide surety. I am assuming that these three are siblings, based only on the association with Charles. James already had a son Samuel (both James Sr and James Jr). Samuel (who married Elender Lea) definitely had a grandson David, and I believe his oldest son was a David.

Possible remarriage of Elizabeth or a daughter:
Marriages:
Name: Betsy Davidson
Spouse: John Harvill
Marriage Date: 20 Dec 1801
County: Oglethorpe
State: Georgia
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David, who married Caroline Lane might be the son of David, although I have him under James due to better match of age. He substituted in War of 1812 for a John Davidson. Since he was single at the time, perhaps he filled in for his brother John?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another possible child is Nancy Davidson, who married a Jesse Lane. Jesse and Caroline were related, I do not know exactly how.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some trees show David settling in Washington Co (1800) and Brekinridge, Co Ky (1810 and 1820) One son was a Crable, who by death certificate was born in Washington County in 1796. I do not believe this could be David, as he was in Campbell County at that time. David of Brekinridge Co may have been son of an Andrew Davison, and a brother to Philimon, per other trees.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Cockrane

There is death date from ancestry.com tree, Nantroup Family Tree, owner: Teamteaque72, of 23 Oct 1779

I do not know thier source of this date.
