MADE AN ARREST ON A GAMBLING CHARGE

A WELL-EQUIPPED PLACE
'Buzzer' System Enabled Lookout Man to Warn Gamesters
Raid by the Police on the Place Last Week Resulted in Action Taken Today
Frank Bennett was arrested today on a warrant charging him with keeping and maintaining a gambling house at his hardware store at 1011 1-2 Massachusetts street. The arrest came after information had been brought to the office of the county attorney concerning the ar-rest of a number of gamblers there last week by the police.
Lorin Starr and Charlie Bowers were also arrested in connection with the gaming at the house at which Bennett is alleged to have permitted gambling. The charge which was placed against them was setting up and operatiug gambling devices.
The three men were arraigned this afternoon before Judge John W. Clark. The preliminary hearing was set for March 8. Bennett and Starr were released after bond of >$500 had been given by each of them. The bond of Bowers was fixed at $500, which he was unable to give. He was placed in jail awaiting preliminary hearing of the case.
Interesting testimony is expected to be heard at the preliminary hearing. When tbe police arrested gamb-lers in the cellar of the Bennett store last week the lights were turned out when the police entered. Evidence has been found which points to the fact that a buzzer system had been installed so that a lookout man in the room above could warn the gamesters below of the approach of any repre-sentative of the law.
An inquisition which has been in progress at tbe courthouse for sever-al days enabled the officers to secure information which tended to prove that a full-fledged gambling house was in operation. It is believed that gambling has been in progress there for a considerable period.

BITTER REPROACHES FOR CARD PLAYING
Sentences Passed in District Court on Persons Found Guil-ty During the Three Weeks' Session of the Criminal Sec-tion of the Court.
Judge C. A. Smart of the district court this morning scored society gambling and card games in no uncertain terms, when sentencing Loren Starr and Archie Houghton, two young men convicted of gambling in the term of court just closed. In his homily on gambling the judge showed the injustice of the public opinion that will permit one man. convicted of rolling dice in a basement, to be sent to the penitentiary, but which think nothing of the society matron or business man who play bridge for high stakes or valuable prizes. He also said that in his opinion the laws on gambling are unduly severe.
Starr was paroled under the di-rection of the court, his parole to remain good as long as he abstains from gambling and supports his wife and baby. Houghton was also paroled in care of Walter Johns.

Several newpaper articles reference Loren as a house painter.
