Quick review of Campbell County tithes - James Davidson
1796 has TWO James…one is next to David…the other next to Joseph and John., possibly the Tennessee branch. 1797 no James, 1798 one James, 1799…James with a tithe. No James and few Davidsons in 1800, 1801 James without a tithe. Candidate son: Sam appears next to James in 1801, married in 1802 at age 19 per tithes.. (Later census listed as son of James) 1802 & 1803 James with a tithe, 1804 two tithes. 1805 back to one tithe. Candidate son: John appears next to James in 1805, but this could be the John who appeared the year earlier. Could also be Stephen, would have been 16 in 1802. In 1806, James loses tithe and Abner and John appear next to him. There is another John as well in the census.. (Abner was married in 1806 at age 18 per tithes.) James appears in 1807. (1808 not available), James has additional tithe in 1809, 1810. In 1811 James is back to one tithe. Candidate son: a Young…appears first in 1811… next to David. A third David also appears first in 1811, next to Joseph. I will list this David as son of James. This is probably the David who married Carolyn Lane, based on age. [Note: James brother David also lost a tithe, he already had a son David, so I believe Young was his son.] Two James appears in 1812…one next to an Allen-married 1818 in Charlotte County by Rev Sam, another James is standalone. Two also appear in 1813, and one has an extra tithe. In 1814, two James, tithe is missing. Candidate son: Possibly William, mentioned in court records. Based on tithes, this person would be about 17 in 1814. Note: Robert Wright 1 white, 1 horse in 1811 PB tax list; 1 white, 8 blacks, 4 horses in 1812 PB tax list; in 1813 PB tax list lists no whites or blacks, only entry is 2 horses. Lists 1 white and 6 blacks in 1814.

Summary

In 1793, a northwestern portion of Wilkes County was cut aside to form the new county of Oglethorpe.
Several border adjustments were made in the following years. The first permanent settlements in what is now Oglethorpe County were along the Broad River ~ settled by a group of Virginia planters in the 1780s and along Long Creek near the town of Lexington. Lexington was incorporated in 1806 as the county seat. Settlers grew mainly tobacco and cotton, and found deposits of granite, gold, iron, copper and other minerals.

State of Virginia, Campbell County
On the 27th day of March 1844, before me Henry J. ? a Justice of the Peace in and for said county, personally appeared Mrs Jane Cyre, a resident of said county, aged 83 years, who being first duly sworn according to the law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 4, 1836 and the Act explanatory of said act, passed March 30, 1837:

That she was married to James Davidson a soldier in the Revolutionary War in the year 1779- the same person who performed two terms of service in the militia, after he was married to declarant, from the county of Bedford. The first of which tour of service, he performed under Captain Mathews, and was marched to the South, and was at what was called Gates defeat, and was gone 5 or 6 months from home before he later wed; which was the Spring, and summer of next year after the declarant and said James Davidson was married as aforesaid. The next time that her husband performed was the Spring, and summer after the first tour, at the South again - under Capt Adam Clements - at a place called 96 in one of the Carolinas, and was from home 4 months or more - it being of ? time where he left house and returned about August. She thinks he was gone longer the first time, than the last- she reckons about 9 months in both tours.

She further declares that she was married to the said James Davidson in February 1779; that her husband, the said James Davidson died on the 22nd day of January 1818 - that she was afterward married to Nicholas Cyre, a US pensioner in May 1819 - and who died in the 17th day of November 1836; and that her maiden name was Cockrane, and that she was a widow on the 4th of July 1836, and still remaining a widow, as will now fully appear by reference to the proof ?

Sir,

Enclosed are the papers claiming a pension in behalf of Mrs Jane Cyre-whose first husband was James Davidson, under whom she claims her pension, according to the provision of the Acts of July 4, 1836 and March 3, 1837. I always prefer having more than one witness as to the service of the soldier but at the extreme age of these soldiers it is difficult to find a witness alive tht can prove facts in the Rev war. The evidence in this case is positive (Saml Davidson) and to the point and considering the lapse of time and scarcity of the contemporaries of the Rev era-ought to besufficient. If I should come across othe evidence in this case I will forward it to you, by time of action.

Yours respectfully,
77 in 1844 - born in 1767

State of Virginia, Bedford County
On this 26 day of March 1844, before me Paschal Buford a Justice of the Peace, in area for said county, personally appeared Samuel Davidson, a respectable resident of said county, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on this oath say -that he is 77 years old-and was well acquainted with James Davidson during the Revolutionary war the same person who was married to Mrs Jane Cockrane during the Rev' war in the month of February 1779 - it being a year before he served his first tour in the militia in and during the Revolutionary war in the summer of 1780 - under Capt. Robt Watkins at Caulifaux SC Gates defeat so called .
Said Jas Davidson, being there a married man as aforesaid that the first tour that said Jas Davidson served, was from the then county of Bedford Va under said Capt Ro Watkins being their place of rendevous in April on about the 1st of May and marched to the South under said Gates defeat, which was in August 1780-and that said Jas Davidson was regularly discharged and returned home in September or October following the Battle as aforesaid. That the second tour, that said Jas Davidson served in the Rev war, was from said county again-and under Capt Adam Clements, principal part of which time was at the siege of 96 in S. Carolina-it being the summer after his aforesaid tour at Gates defeat that on that occasion the company to which he belonged, left Bedford about the first of April 1781, or corn planting time-and served out his tour, was regularly discharged, and returned home in the month of July, or early part of August-corn being large enough to lay aside working; which said tour was at least 3 months or more - making it all 8 or 9 month service, which the said Jas Davidson performed during the Rev war, after he was married as aforesaid. That said Jas Davidson died in the county of Campbell just after the last war on 1816 or 1817 and that his widow Jane Davidson, in a few years after was married to Nicholas Cyre, a Revolutionary soldier also- who was a pensioner before he died; and that despondent has understood, that his wodow is still alive, and single. That at the time, said Jas Davidson saw his first tour despondent was between 13 and 14 years old - and even when he left home, and when he returned on both tours-and also recollects where he was married to the aforesaid Jane Cockrane at New London the then court-house of Bedford by the Rev Jno Hall Of the church of England.

Readers of the Chronicle may recall an article in the April 2012 issue (p.2, column 1) about a group of Cyrus descendants with a plan to dedicate a somewhat-forgotten Cyrus cemetery. Since that article, the group (led by CCHS members, Richard Carroll and Letty and Raymond Cyrus) has seen their project through to its completion. The cemetery, located off Nowlin's Mill Rd. in Campbell County, was the burial place for the first known member of the local Cyrus clan, Nicholas Cyrus, who came to Campbell County in 1783; the last burial was that of Peter Cyrus in 1939.
