Robert Davidson Jr.

Robert Batson Davidson, Jr., died October 1, 2007, after a nine-month battle with stomach cancer, a battle he fought with courage, dignity and grace.

Bob was born on Sept. 27, 1936, in Richmond, Ky., where he attended Model High School. He earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy, West Point, and graduated with the class of 1960. As a cadet, he distinguished himself as an intercollegiate wrestler and member of the Cadet Chapel Choir. His Army career as a signal corps officer included tours of duty in Italy, Korea and with the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, N.C. He resigned from the Army as a major in 1968 to attend Harvard Business School, graduating with distinction two years later.

Bob began his second career with Burr Brown Corp. in finance and later in marketing. He moved to Teradyne Inc. for the next eleven years, first as Midwest sales manager and then as Bell account manager, living in Weston, Mass. He became a vice-president at Bowmar Inc., then moved to Scientific Atlanta to head up their telecommunications instrumentation business. In 1991, he became president of Wandel and Goltermann Technologies Inc., which he took public in 1994. He finished his business career as president and chief operating officer of Integrated Network Corp. in Bridgewater, N.J., retiring in 2001.

Bob loved spending time with friends and family, particularly his 15 grandchildren. He was an avid traveler, a connoisseur of white wine, and a golf enthusiast.

He is survived by: his wife, Fran of Morristown, N.J.; his mother Annette of Richmond, Ky.; his brother, John of Madison County, Ky.; five children; and his grandchildren. His children are Guy (Robert, III) of New York, N.Y., Dan of Burnsville, Minn., Leslie Jaworski of Grinnell, Iowa, Thom of Wayland, Mass., and Marian Brodney of East Lyme, Conn.

He will be interred at West Point following a service in the Old Cadet Chapel on Oct. 9.

Donations can be made in his memory to: the Richmond First Christian Church Memorial Fund.

For Dad?s Reception
October 9, 2007
USMA, West Point, NY

Hi, my name is Leslie and I would love to share some of my thoughts and memories of my dad with you.

When I look back at my childhood, I remember so many different times, places, sights, smells, and sounds. I have a collection of memories that change as I changed throughout my life. My dad, on the other hand, was a constant in my life.

One time, when I was about 10 years old, a friend of mine told me that she was afraid of my dad. Her comment surprised me and I think I laughed. But I thought about it and I could understand her feelings. Dad was a presence. He always stood tall, chest out and shoulders back. He encouraged me and my brothers and sister to do the same. He had a deep and commanding voice, especially to all things young and small. His walk was deliberate and his build and stance were manly. And if he wasn?t smiling, and no one smiles 100% of the time, he could come off as a pretty serious and stern fellow. So, although he never did anything to my friend to make her scared of him, I could understand her feelings. They were a first impression.

It is funny though, her first impression of fear was totally opposite of my source of stability and comfort. Sure, he had a deep voice that commanded attention. He oozed with self-confidence and know-how. He was a very smart man who was quite sure of himself ? but in a totally non-pompous way. If you didn?t know him, he would appear much more serious than he really was? but if you truly knew him, you saw much more than his first impression.

Dad wasn?t one of those mushy, sentimental fathers. He wasn?t one to dish out love and affection. However, as his child you knew that he loved you and cared for you more than words could ever say. Dad didn?t always need words. He led by example. And when he did use words to show his approval and affection, he didn?t use very many. He didn?t have to. With Dad, less was more.

Words seemed to mean a little more when Dad said them, whether he was making a point, reprimand, or cheering for his kids from the sidelines.

I loved it when Dad would attend my soccer games or diving meets. At soccer games, he would stand separate from the crowd, so as not to be bothered. He was always into the game? and within earshot. Of course, his deep voice carried. Dad was always positive and encouraging.

At diving meets, Dad couldn?t cheer the same way but, nonetheless, just his presence was inspiring. Whatever the sport or activity, when Dad was there you tried harder. He made you want to be the best you could be.

Throughout my life, and even a month ago, he told me, ?Leslie, you can do whatever you want to do, if you set your mind to it.? Dad wanted me to always know that the sky?s the limit. He never wanted me to sell myself short. He was one of my biggest fans. He cheered me on through life?

As Dad got older, he softened a wee bit around the edges. He shared his feelings a little more. But he still carried himself as always: with pride, dignity, and integrity. I am going to miss his familiar deep voice, his million dollar smile, his great sense of humor, his fatherly advice, his encouragement and support, the familiar look in his eyes, and his very presence that was my dad. He was a great father and an amazing constant in my life.

Thank you, Dad.

I love you.

RBD Jr. - 10/9/2007

Words once still speak,
Meandering through time together spent,
Submerged emotions flow
Into conversations and wisdom's past,
Perspectives not understood
Until my family blossomed,
A relationship forged anew.
Your love was hard at times,
But always present.
Blood is thicker than water.
Your legacy lives on.
We say goodbye
Until we meet again.
My Father,
My Friend.
We send this old Solider home.

Fine of $500 Also Remitted on Conviction in Oklahoma County Court.
LIVE STRAIGHT LIFE!
Davidson Says Famous Boot- legger Expresses Willing-ness to Quit Game.
OKLAHOMA CITY, July 2.'97Wm. Ham J. Creekmore was pardoned by R. L. Davidson, acting governor, late this afternoon, of the sentence of one year in Jail and fine of $500 imposed by the county court of Oklahoma county for conspiracy to violate the state prohibition law.
Creekmore was discharged from the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kan., last September, after serving approximately two years. He was convicted in federal court of bribery of federal officers and pleaded guilty to other charges of introducing liquor into Indian territory and bribery of jurors. His sentence in the federal prison were allowed to run concurrently. A petition for pardon presented to the president of the United States by Creekmore while he was in the fed-eral prison was cheeked by protest of Attorney General Freellng and of William H. Zwick, then county Judge of Oklnhoma county, before whom Creekmore had been con-victed. His trial in the county court took place while the federal charges were pending.
Creekmore has been free under bond since his release from Leavenworth last full, waiting for decision by the criminal court of appeals upon his conviction In the county court. Creekmore's home is at Jay,Delaware county, jtcfnro his convlction he lived at Joplin. Mo.
Senator Davidson left Oklahoma City for Tulsa this afternoon, and was expected to leave the state last night. Tom C. Waldrep of Shawnee, speaker of the house of representatives, came to Oklahoma City this afternoon to become acting governor tomorrow if Senator Davidson carries out his plan to leave the state.
Creekmore was in the city tonight, "I do not know if I have been pardoned or not," he said. I got here about five o'clock and expect to go on to Chickashaw Saturday morning. My attorneyis not of the city and I have not heard if the governor signed the pardon."
Senator Davidson at his home last night confirmed the above dispatch that he had granted the pardon while acting as governor.
In explanation of his action. Mr. Davidson said that in view of this fact that Creekmore had served four years, paid his fine and ex-pressed a wllingness to quit the game and live a straight life, he felt justified in giving him a chance. Creekmore's health failed him while he was in the penitentiary and Mr Davidson said that he was moved bv this fact also. If he had served his time In the countv jail his life would probably have been shortened manv years, he said.
Creekmore piled his trade In Tulsa county and vicinity for sev-eral years before he was apprehend-ed. With the pardon granted him yesterday he is now a free man.
"I am going on my ranch and live a straight life," he said.
