Lawrence Arthur 'Art' Davidson, 85, of Carmi went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 1:50 a.m. at the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, Illinois. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 29, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Altamont with Rev. Dr. Lowell Donnelley officiating. Burial will follow in the Watson Cemetery with military rites by Gieseking Schwerdtfeger V.F.W. Post 7676 of Altamont. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28th at the First Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Altamont, Baptist Children's Home, or the donor's choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lawrence 'Art' Davidson was born on Wednesday, April 6, 1932 in Watson, IL to Kenneth and Myrtle (Loy) Davidson. He attended school at the Watson Elementary School and Effingham High school where he graduated with the class of 1945. Art served in the U.S. Army during Korea from 1952-1954. He had worked at Norge Borg Warner (Fedders) in Effingham after finishing high school and before being drafted into the Army. While in Korea, one unforgettable event occurred when as a part of the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Battalion, one assignment was to carry in the tables used for the signing of the armistice with North Korea at the Panmunjom Base Camp. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to his job with Norge Borg Warner where he worked on the assembly line until he transferred to the Time and Motion Study Department, and became supervisor of that department in 1975. He remained in that position until 1980. He resigned his position with (then) Fedders and went full time repairing radiators at Davidson Radiator Service, which he and his father, Kenneth had opened in 1964. Art operated Davidson Radiator Service until he retired in 1997, after selling to Ben Holmes who operated as Holmes Radiator Repair.
In 1957, Art and Evea (Vail) Davidson were married and moved to rural Altamont where they lived for 59 years. After raising a wonderful family that included 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren, they moved down to live with their daughter, Diane in November of 2016 due to his poor health. Art had been a member of the First Baptist Church, Altamont since 1958 and had served for over 50 years as a teacher of the Men's Sunday school class and had served as a deacon and in many other capacities over the years. In December, Art and Evea would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. During their marriage, he took on the challenge of building their house and benefited from the generosity of family, neighbors and church friends. When the ground was broken for the current First Baptist Church building he assisted with the 5 year long construction project. Art enjoyed sports '96 first as a participant and then as an observer '96 baseball, basketball, football and especially the St. Louis Cardinals, Fighting Illini and college basketball. He found much enjoyment in attending his children and grandchildren's sports activities and school functions and loved playing games; dominoes, "42", and chess with family and friends.
Art is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Evea of Carmi; daughter, Diane (David) Healy of Carmi; grandsons, Mark (Jennifer) Healy; great grandson, Myles Healy; grandsons, USN E5 Adam Healy and Ethan Healy; great granddaughter, Adalyn Healy and great grandson, Aiden Healy; son, Paul (Diane) Davidson of Greenville; grandson, Dr. Bryan (Ashley) Davidson; son, Michael (Debbie) Davidson of Strasburg; granddaughter, Samantha Radloff; great grandsons, Mason and Parker; granddaughter, Jennifer (Brian) Vahling; great granddaughters, Charlotte (Charley) and Savannah; brothers, Kenneth Davidson of Marion and Phil (Kim) Davidson of Long Beach, CA; sisters, Alice (Jerry) Frailey of Beecher City, June Ashley of Effingham and Martha (Harold) Neal of Downey, CA; aunt, Ida Pinne of Genoa; many nieces, nehews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his: parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Walter and Jessie Vail; brother, Jim Davidson; grandson, Tyler Davidson; nephew, Dale Neal; 5 brothers-in-law; 1 sister-in-law and several aunts and uncles.

SIXTY YEAR OLD LETTER PUBLISHED
This letter was published in the Central Record in 1909. We thought it would be of added interest to our readers if we republished it.
Mr. John Ray of this county handed us the following interesting letter written to his father, Mr. Abner Ray, by Mr. Leander Davidson, father of Mayor L.G. Davidson, of this city.
Bachelors Hall, Morman Bend,
Grand River, Cass Co., Mo.,
November 1st, 1859.
Mr. A. D. Ray,
Lancaster, Ky.
Dear Abner,
I take this opportunity of in-forming you that I am still in the land, and among the living. My health is tolerably good just at this time but I cannot say how. long it will remain so. I have been shaking with the Ague the best six out of eleven: months. I went to the Rocky Mountains this Spring and was in the mines six weeks. I got back in September, and did not make much in the operation. There is gold there and a good deal of it, but it is not every man that goes there that gets much. Mining is just like a lottery--you may work hard for six months and not make more than grub and you may in one day strike a fortune, but the fortunes are like Angels visits, few and far between. There are a few men that have struck fortunes this season, and there are a good many that are not making grub. Yet I believe that these mines would pay if the seasons were long enough for men to work. There is not more than three or four months that men can work at the most, on account of the co1d weather. I saw snow 20 inches deep in August and I dug up frozen earth six inches thick in Greg-ory Diggins in July. I made my calculations to work four months and lay by eight months and pay from 12 to 15 dollars a week for board but I could not make ends meet so I pulled up stakes and took a line of march for North America. Abner and I brought back about $200 worth of the pre-cious metal. I may go back to the mines next Spring with a load or two of provisions but I don't think that I shall ever go with the cal-culation of working in the mines. Mining is not the thing it is cracked up to be, at least it does not suit me. The Indians have been very bad on the Plains this summer and fall . There have been a good many men killed by the Kioways, Paunees and Camanches. The mail was robbed on the 26th of last month by the Kioways and the driver and the conductor killed.
Abner and I are keeping batch and running a circular saw mill on Grand River in Cass County Mo. I will stay here till Spring and if I do not go back to the Mountains I will return to Kentucky, but I want you to write to me as soon as you get this and let us know how they are all getting along at home. I have written four or five letters back since I left home and I have not received one scratch of a pen or heard one word from Garrard Co. since I left it and I want you to write without fail or delay. All the connections out here are well with the exceptions of Chills which are as common here as bad colds ever were in Kentucky.
I will close for the present with
Due Respect,
Leander Davidson
Abner you must not fail to write as soon as you get this and direct your letter to Morristown, Mo, Cass Co. Tell James Nave that I would like to hear from him.LD

Per Sandra S. Temple: "A rather long and funny story about her (Aunt Zona) Uncle Lee was a coal Miner, they had 4 boys, never had any thing lived in shacks. Aunt Zona had to draw water, heat it on a wood burning stove, you could eat off her floors, she was a clean freak. Took a bath every day, didn't have a bed spread, just a white sheet (it was spotless white white). Anyway, when I went to Nursing School they took us to the N/H where she was at. They assigned us patients, guess what, she was my very first patient. I had to give her a shower and she beat me up, I wore the bruises for a long time."
