A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky 1812-1913, compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p. 96. SAMUEL PHELPS DEATHERAGE sprung from pioneer stock on both sides of his family, was born in Madison County, December 22, 1855. He received his scholastic training at the best schools of his native County, completing his education at Central University. His boyhood and early manhood was spent on a farm; later he became associated with one of the banks of Richmond and his business career has been largely in that line. He was made a Mason December, 1890, passed February, 1891, and raised March, 1891. Received the degrees of the Chapter during 1891 and was Knighted the same year. He was elected Master December,1893, after having served as both Junior and Senior Warden. He was elected Eminent Commander in 1894. He is deservedly popular with all who know him. He married Miss Turley, who with an only daughter, constitute his family.

From Rebecca Veselka:
David was married first to Emma, who died giving birth to their daughter, Emma Martha. After this, David wanted to work for the rail road, so he left Emma behind with his parents and went with the railroad to Iowa.

He later wrote letters back home questioning the Mennonite/Amish faiths.

At that time, David met Olive McCreedy and married, and he became a Lutheran.

Sam, David and John are the only ones who left their Amish background.

Worked in a water wheel driven mill that turned stone disks to grind the grain into flour and corn meal. The owner of the mill was a man named Phelps. In 1900, the Chicago Gret Western built a shop at Oelwein to repair the cars and he worked as a car repairman. He worked outside, as there was no shop to house the cars as have today. He worked outside one day when the temperature reached 42 degrees below zero, and said "that if he would have known that, he would not have worked that day". In 1905, he had inflamatory rheumatism and he could not work for six months when his doctor told him that he had better move to a drier climate. So, Dec 5th, he arrived in La Junta, Colorado. Possibly, this move was arranged by the railroad. In 1906, he filed on a 1/4 section of land six miles North of town. He children were old enouigh by then to work the fams. They bought stock and raised broom corn and milo maize. By 1912, the family had improved the claim to six head of horse and nineteen head of cattle.
