Jacob White was the son of Henry White of Buckingham County. His family had come to Bedford shortly after the Revolutionary War, and settled near the James River, in the Northeastern part of the county.
Jacob served with distinction in the Revolutionar war with the rank of Captain. Before coming to Bedford , he married Hannah Spiers. He was an early and prominent settler in Bedford County. The county was almost a wilderness when he came to Bedford, and with his own hands, cleared and improved the beautiful place on Otter Creek. This home he built, except for a period of a few years, remained in the White family until 1928. The manor tract, known as Charlemont Lodge was split when sold.
Jacob was a wealthy landowner of Bedford, and was prominent in all local affairs. He served as Justice of the Peace for a number of years. After the death of his wife, Hannah, he remarried on December 10, 1816. He married Nancy Oglesby only 11 months after Hannaha death. There were no children by this last marriage.
Jacob died June 2, 1832.
