General Notes: Husband - Samuel Davidson

No proof that Samule is a member ofr DNA family 7.

Dec. 24, 1791; Samuel Davison & Eunice Creasey, dt Thomas; Benjamin Davison, Surety; Married by
Joseph Drury, Dec. 29, 1791, Bedford County, Virginia

Do not know for sure that Eunice was his wife. Time looks right and Son Meredith named a daughter Eunice.

The 1815 Landowners Directory shows Samuel Davidson owning land on Western Road, which was 15 miles west of the Bedford Courthouse. This would be between Bedford and Botetourt County.

From the Buford family of Bedford Va, By
Fern K. Buford Walker
Copyright April 2007©:
The introduction to Bedford County, Virginia to the BUFORD family came shortly after the formation of the county in 1754. There were four Buford brothers who came into the area from their birth home in Culpepper County, Virginia. They were the sons of John Buford and Judith Early Buford.

The four brothers were James, William, Thomas (John Thomas) and Henry. Thomas and Henry received several hundred acres in 'land grants' located in the Gap of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Bedford County. This Gap became known, and still is to this day, as Buford's Gap.

Other families besides the Bufords were the Sinklers/St. Clair whose land grand was for 244 acres and 169 all bordering Henry Bufords land. Robert Sinkler/St Clair, the father, built a two story log home for his family on his 244 acres and purchased another 475 acres in the Gap from Christopher Saunders. Robert's total land holdings were over a thousand acres by 1812. Isaac Sinkler owned the 169 acres bordering his father's land.

Also bordering Henry Bufords land was a Scotchman named Samuel Davidson.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From History of Bedford:
Schellsburg. I am indebted to John P. Reed Esq, grandson of the founder of Schellsburg, for the following sketch: "Schellsburg, 'the loveliest village of the plain,' is situated on the eastern slope of Chestnut Ridge, one of the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, nine miles west of Bedford, on the turnpike leading to Pittsburgh. It was laid out by John Schell, a native of Goshenhoppen, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in the year 1810, who was forced to leave his early home on account of the 'alien and sedition law,' and his 'liberty pole' proclivities.

He came to Bedford County about the year 1800, and stopped at 'Nine Mile Town,' west of Bedford, and bought the tract of land patented as 'Nine Mile Town,' and an adjoining tract patented in the name of 'Pekin,' about five hundred acres, from Samuel Davidson and John Anderson, of Bedford, in 1801, and on these lands, on the road leading from Bedford to Fort Pitt, he laid out the village of Schellsburg.

It grew apace, and the Legislature, by act of 19th of March, 1838, made it a borough. It is a beautiful and substantial village of about five hundred inhabitants, situated near the foot of a picturesque ridge, surrounded by beautiful meadows and fields, forming quite an extended plain, with a fine view of the distant Buffalo Ridge and the Wills Mountains. John Schell donated several lots for church and educational purposes, and some ten acres of level land, on the summit of the ridge, for a church and cemetery. Here was built, mainly through his efforts, the first church (a union church of the German Reformed and Lutheran denominations) in that part of the county, which remains today a relic of the labors of the pioneers of this section, and is used now only as a mortuary chapel of the beautiful burial-ground that surrounds it. In the village, the Reformed, Lutheran, Methodist, and Presbyterian people are represented by churches, and a creditable brick school-house supplies the wants of the villagers in that regard. A town hall is now also in process of erection. At an early day the town was the centre of business for thirty miles in a westerly and northerly direction; now the business is more diffused."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1851 -I have checked the wills at the Bedford County Courthouse, and the only Will I found was for Samuel Davidson, dated Jan. 18, 1842, and probated in 1851. It shows he had the following sons, Edmond, Meridith, Robert, Thomas, George and Jonathan, daughters were Lucinda and Nancy. Thomas and Jonathan were appointed his executors. Witnesses on the will were: John B. Otey, Wilson C. HeWitt, and Abraham Renfroe.

Note: A Samuel Davidson is listed in most of the Bedford County tithes, 1791-1805. I do not know how to distinguish this man from Samuel, son of James, who I had assumed was the Samuel listed with Agnew, John and William in 1793 and 1794, and all appear in the following few years in Sullivan/Carter County Tennessee.

Samuel provided input for Jane Cochran Davidsons pension application in 1844 indicating he was a resident (or at least nearby) of Bedford in 1779.

Robt Watkins at Caulifaux SC Gates defeat so called .
Said Jas Davidson, being there a married man as aforesaid that the first tour that said Jas Davidson served, was from the then county of Bedford Va under said Capt Ro Watkins being their place of ?? in April on about the 1st of May and marched to the South under said Gates defeat, which was in August 1780-and that said Jas Davidson was regularly discharged and returned home in September or October following the Battle as aforesaid. That the second tour, that said Jas Davidson served in the Rev war, was from said county again-and under Capt Adam Clements, principal part of which time was at the siege of 96 in S. Carolina-it being the summer after his aforesaid tour at Gates defeat that on that occasion the company to which he belonged, left Bedford about the first of April 1781, or corn planting time-and served out his tour, was regularly discharged, and returned home in the month of July, or early part of August-corn being large enough to lay aside working; which said tour was at least 3 months or more - making it all 8 or 9 month service, which the said Jas Davidson performed during the Rev war, after he was married as aforesaid. That said Jas Davidson died in the county of Campbell just after the last war on 1816 or 1817 and that his widow Jane Davidson, in a few years after was married to Nicholas Cyre, a Revolutionary soldier also- who was a pensioner before he died; and that despowan? Has understood, that his wodow is still alive, and single. That at the time, said Jas Davidson saw his first tour desponent was between 13 and 14 years old - and/even when he left home, and when he returned on both tours-and also ??, where he was married to the aforesaid Jane Cockrane at New London the then court-house of Bedford by the Rev Jno Walt? A miscellaneous note for Thomas is: that Miss Matilda Stinnett, one of Thomas' great grand daughters, wrote that tradition handed down through her mother, who was Judy Creasy, a granddaughter of Thomas, says that the father of Thomas Creasy was named William. It is said that Thomas is the founder of the Bedford County, Virginia branch of the Creasy family.

General Notes: Husband - James Davidson

Basic link to Bedford is provided by Information from Martin family Bible (see below). I would show him as a son of James (instead of David here) because James most likely had a son James, but was older. There is no proof that this James is a member of Davidson family 7, I am just basing it on location of birth and the name.

Random thought: Seems like a James born in Bedford would be from Davidson 7 family. The age seems to match William. Maybe the James observed on the tithe is James born in NC. Maybe William went by William, but he was actually a Jr? Perhaps this is a son of David.

Martin Bible Record:
Welcome to the DAVIDSON/MARTIN Bible. There are 4 pages of family records relating to the DAVIDSON and MARTIN families. The Bible originally was the property of James DAVIDSON and his first wife Rebecca BILLINGS. His 3rd wife was Lucinda MARTIN (nee HILL) who was the widow of Masten Martin. When James DAVIDSON died in 1866, the Bible stayed with Lucinda who later passed it on to her children. There appear to be at least 3 different handwritings in the Bible. The first is James DAVIDSON, the next might be Azariah MARTIN (Lucinda's son) and the third ?

There is a note at the bottom of the first page which refers to the xerox copy and reads: Copied Sept 8, 1977 from the family Bible in possession of Ernest WEISS a g-grandson of Azariah MARTIN (living) Sept 8 1977 Flatwoods. The word (living) refers to Ernest WEISS (son of Mattie, daughter of Viana, daughter of Masten D. MARTIN) not Azariah. Ernest WEISS died in 1995 and I have no idea where the Bible is now.

Also it is important to know that there are TWO Azariah Martins mention in these Bible pages. #1. Azariah the Younger (1839 -1921) was the son of Lucinda HILL and her first husband Masten Martin. #2. Azariah the Elder (1764 -1834) was #1's grandfather for whom he was named.

This is a transcript of the original. The original I have is a copy of a copy, or possibly even a 3rd or 4th copy. The quality is pretty good although there are things that are hard to read. There is evidence in some areas that someone took the first copy and wrote over certain words to try and make them easier to read. This may have led to errors. In my transcript I have corrected the spelling of common words, but I have written names as they appear. In some cases the same person's name is spelled differently in different entries. I have no idea of which spelling is the "correct" one. This is most evident with Viana Jane MARTIN. Her name is given as Beranah and later as Vina. In census and marriage documents it is Viena, Vianna, or Viana etc.

Letters or numbers enclosed in ( ) are alternates for the preceding letter or number that was hard to read. Sentences that are enclosed in ( ) are comments ( in red ) that I have added for clarity and obviously are not on the original copy.

Although each page had a title such as Birth or Marriage, the entries are not in keeping with that order. Each page contains a little bit of everything.

Any entry followed by a large * is a person that I do not know. Nor do I know how or even if they fit into the DAVIDSON or MARTIN families.

Questions about all of the other people can be directed to me: Nancy Hill at this email address: joenan_hill@hotmail.com <mailto:joenan_hill@hotmail.com>. Please note that between joenan and hill is an underscore like this: _
