According to his death certificate, he was 84 when he died, which would have him born in 1777, and his parents are shown as James and Virginia Davidson. I wonder if his wife knew his birth date, and his daughter, who provided the death certificate info did not, as his birth date would be 1780 based on what was reported in all census records when his wife was alive. Per tithe records, he is first shown as age 16 in 1799, which would show him as being born in 1783.

Rev Sam first appears in 1801 next to James, and possibly in 1802 next to Joseph. Possibly in 1803 and 1804 and 1806. 1807, 1809 ("son of James"). Three Sams in 1810 thru 1814, assume Rev is one of them. (Son of Alexander and son of David the other two.)

From another researcher:
Apparently Samuel Davidson was a baptist minister and eventually elder of the Red Oak Baptist. Church, Appomattox County, VA for over 57 years. He traveled a lot ministering to people. There are several handwritten notes written by my mother, Geraldine Margaret Jones concerning Samuel Davidson and his son John Davisdson (who was also a minister) recorded and stored in the Family Group Sheets folder. Aproximatey three pages recording their history notes were written sometime between 1975 and 1995.
Examples: According to memoir of Elder J P Smith in August 1815. Elder Samuel Davidson was preaching at a Baptist Camp meeting at Red Oak meeting home.I have traveled since my last report, 559 miles, delivered 33 sermons, baptized 16 persons, attended two protracted meetings, and collected $50 dollars for this Geneeral Association.---February 11 1841.

27 June 1861 Appomattox County.
Our beloved, Elder Samuel Davidson, after having the pastorial care of the Red Oak Baptist Church for 51 years and having become old a rather infirm to render his appointments punctuallly and regularly thinks it would be best to resign. And I urge brethren to obtain an younger man. Who would be better qualified to discharge all of his duties as pastor than he can do for on of his age. He will not remove his membership from us. His record of union is not to be severed. He has spent a long and excedingly happy time together with chritian love and fellowship. He wishes to spend the remainder of his life in retirement as he has been laboring in the minstry for fity seven years in the ministry.

Religous Herald, October 17, 1861
Elder Samuel Davidson
Few ministers that started in the early past of the century a mostly sane Del Walker and William Hariis remain. Elder J. C. Hammer wrote in his communication that Samuel Davidson had died. Few ministers have been more honored in the aversions of sins or baptized more souls. for fifty years he was pastor of the Red Oak Baptist Church. one of the largest in the Appomattox association. Many churches were raised under his faithful ministrations. For several years he was an active missionary for the General Association. Elder Davidson enjoy a high degree of confidence of the community. As a minster he ever commanded the love and respect of those he ministered. He was a good man and full of the "Holy Ghost".This laborous and venerable servant of Christ breathed his last Sunday morning the 6th (illegible), at his residence in Appottomax County, VA in the 81 years of his age. Although his sufferings were great, he bore them with patience and fortitude. and the closing scene was happy. In the house of death he retained his sense until the last. A few hours before his death that the funeral service should be prepared from Timothy 24: 6,7,8 Appomattox

Appomattox Virginia Heritage, 1845-2000, S. E. Grose
Red Oak Baptist Church dates back to 1775 per the Appomattox Association minutes. The first church was at Bent Creek, then moved to Wreck Island, near Oakville, where Old Red Oak was built.
From Old Red Oak came Hebron Baptist Church, including its membership in the Stone-wall area. Also in the area was Old Stonewall Baptist Church.
Also:
In and around the community of Oakville are some of the oldest churches in Appomattox County are located. "Two of them are still going strong, Red Oak Baptist Church founded July 4, 1776 and Liberty Chapel Baptist Church founded in 1885"said Hazel Lee Martin.

Red Oak Baptist Church was originally located about one mile west of Oakville on the Stonewall Road.It was used by the military during the war. After the war Red Oak Church was moved to its present location. A new church was organized from the omother church in the Stonewall area and was called Hebron, she continued.
There were many other names prominent in the early days. Among them were: Diuguid, Moore, Drinkard, Lucado, Harvey, Marsh, Rogers, Phelps, Thorpe, Hughes, Bryant, Nowlin, Lewis, Williamson. Harris, Carson, Me Iver, Moss, Abbitt, Doss, Page, Coleman.Alexander Phelps, a large land owner in the early days of Oakville, gave land for Old Red Oak Baptist Church, according to E. Wayne Phelps. The church was named for the many large oak trees in the vicinity.
"At one time, Dr. Robert Phelps owned approxi-mately 1,500 acres and Captain Charles W. Phelps owned approximately 1,200 acres," E. Wayne Phelps said. "In fact, a well located on property owned today by Wayne Phelps was hand-dug in 1937 by Jake Rogers a local well dig-ger. The well is 60 feet deep and 7 feet in circum-ference or larger and in good condition"The old Phelps-North Cemetery is on this property which goes back to the eighteen hundreds.
Quite a few people who lived in or near Oakville will be remembered for their contribution to the community. Dr. R. A. North gave land to the present day Red Oak and also was a well known physi-cian. Mrs. Thorpe, effectionately call "Miss Mollie" was post mistress and a good neighbor to all. John Hughes, a good businessman, who moved to Lynchburg to begin a Dodge automobile dealer-ship, and Jim Harvey whose family became in-volved in the coal business in Lynchburg. The busi-nesses founded by Hughes and Harvey are still in ooeration Lvnchburg today.

Also:
Hebron Baptist Church is located in the north-western section of Appomattox County on road 608 at the intersection of 613. The church was organized in 1849 with 25 charter members, twelve from old Red Oak Baptist Church, some five miles distant; eight transferred from old Stone-wall Baptist Church, one admitted by letter from Charlottesville, and four received by baptism.
Slaves, whose masters belonged to the church, were admitted to membership. A large balcony in the front of the building provided accommodations for them.

Historical Notes of Appomattox County, 1824-1861
RED OAK BAPTIST CHURCH was established in 1776 in the Bent Creek neighborhood of Buckingham County (now Appomattox).
