Grant on Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 21802 Nimrod received a grant on Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 21802 issued the 19th Nov 1783, for 120 acres on Wolf Glade Creek a branch of Crooked Creek on 19 Nov 1783 at Grayson Co., VA, by Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson, surveyed on 3 Jun 1806. Grayson County is next to Washington County, and later Smythe County. Apparently lived most of his life in Bedford, Virginia. (lived on Otter creek per one tree). The older children seem to have married in Grayson County.

Immigrated with Father Johann G. Newman Philadephia, PA Ship`Leslie` 7 Oct 1749. Served VA Regiment 1760 under Bryd. Virginia Colonial Militia 1651 - 1776. Nimrod served in the French & Indian War (1755-1763) `Nimrod Newman to the satisfaction of this court that he served as a fifer in the Old Va, Regiment in the year 1760 under Colonel Byrd and that he never transferred his claim to any land for that service.` (Order Book court for Bedford County September 27, 1779). Military Cert dated Nov. 10, 1779. Served with Captain Adam Clement`s Company Va Militia sent to assist General Greene in SC 1781. Granted 354 acres for service American Revolution on both sides of Goose Creek. Named one of his son after Col. Byrd. 1778-1805 Built and owned a Grist Mill in Little Otter River, Bedford Co., VA. "Payne - Newman. In 1769 Josiah Payne was given permission to erect a grist mill on Little Otter River (DB#3, p. 547) in the Otter Hill Community. In 1778 the tract was passed to Nimrod Newman. In 1778 Nimrod's younger brother, Conrad, also was granted permission to erect a mill on Little Otter River. It is believed that Nimrod Newman and his brother, Conrad (the mountain people referred to him as "Coonrad") came to America from Germany. They probably came through the Port of Philadelphia, thence through the Shenandoah Valley, then to Bedford County. Nimrod, the elder brother, married Sarah Arthur, daughter of John Arthur, of Bedford.

"According to records, Nimrod owned several tracts of land on Little Otter. In his younger days he had served as a fifer with the Virginia troops commanded by Col. William Boyd in the French and Indian War. It is also said that he served in Capt. Adam Clement's company during the Revolutionary War and was with the militia group which sought to join General Greene in South Carolina, in 1781. Conrad is said to have served in Capt. Alexander Micah's company during the Revolution. He owned several hundred acres in Bedford County on Crab Orchard Creek. In addition, he owned several other enterprises, plus the grist mill on Little Otter from 1778 until 1805. After that time Nimrod moved to Grayson County where Conrad had preceded him in 1796.
"Nimrod Newman and Sarah (Arthur) Newman had 13 children. Sons, Arthur Newman, married Lucy Creasy, in Bedford, October 9, 1793, and Nimrod Newman, Jr. married Deborah Wileman, in Bedford County, March 1, 1808. Daughters, Betsy Newman married Pleasant Creasy, in Bedford County, May 26, 1791, Patsey Newman married John Hudnall, in Bedford, December 5, 1793, and Sidney Newman married Franklin Creasy, in Bedford, December 20, 1793.

"Nimrod Newman's brother, Conrad, married Anna Margaretta Brubeck of the Shenandoah Valley. Anna was born in Switzerland, the daughter of Adam Brubeck, who came to America as a weaver in 1749. Conrad and Anna (Brubeck) Newman had 12 children: Elizabeth Newman married Samuel Wilks, in Bedford, July 9, 1783; Rosannah Newman married Edmond Franklin, in Bedford, December 28, 1788; Henry Newman married Mary Arthur, in Bedford, February 7, 1788; Dorothy Newman married William Hackworth, in Bedford, may 22, 1790; Barbara Newman married John Wilks, in Bedford, September 3, 1795. Several heirs followed their father to settle in Grayson County, Virginia. Descendants of the Newman's including the J. Alex Laughlin family, still own property in the region. Mr. J. Alexander Laughlin married Lelia Newman, a descendant of the early Newman's. J. Alex Laughlin, Jr. currently resides on Peaks Street, in Bedford."
