Newspaper Article (note mispelling of Gerard):

TOO MANY TWINS
Population Problem Is Facing Hospital

A problem in over-population is being pondered at Richmond hospital today.

In the last week no less than three sets of twins have been born at the hospital and the nursery is filled to capacity.

On June 15, Mr and Mrs James A. Davidson of 4647 Hilltop drive, El Sobrante, became the parents of Orren Gerald and Mary Kathleen Davidson. Three days later came John Ray Hager, Jr and his sister Valerie Lee, children of Mr and Mrs John R Hager of 245 First street, Richmond.

And yesterday, Curtis Lee Burkhart and his brother James Gilber, sons of Mr and Mrs Donald C Burkhart of 129 Eddy Street, Richmond, were delivered.

The six youngsters, all healthy and active, very nearly filled the hospital nursery to capacity. The situation is expected to be relieved today when the Davidson twins go home.

But ol' man stork, a tricky character, could renew the crib shortage again tomorrow by delivering another double-bundle.

14 Nov 1897 , Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois
Squire A. S. Fortney Dead

Well known Citizen gone.

He died Monday after a short illness. His long residence here- successful politically.

Squire Samuel Fortney died at his home in this city, Monday, Nov 14, 1897, at the age of 79 years, the direct cause of his death being a stroke of apoplexy.

The deceased was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, Aug 23, 1818. He came to Illinois at the age of six years and located in White County, near Graysville, removing to Effingham County in 1840. He was married when quite young to Miss Phillips, and to them was born two children, who together with the wife, are long since dead. In 1849 he was again married to Illinois Gillespie, and to them was born eight children, of who seven; Sarah, Susan, Benton, Samuel, Harriet, Sylvester and James are living. His second wife died in 1872. After some time, he married a Mrs. Martin, by whom he had one child. This union did not prove a happy one and they separated and he obtained a divorce. He married a fourth time, his last wife being Lucetta Myers, from Jasper County. They lived together for a time, but finally separated, since which he has lived a single life.

Mr. Fortney's polical career has been a long one and quite successful. He located in Effingham County in 1840 and in Effingham in 1855, at the time of the laying out of Broughton's addision. In 1856 he was elected Justice of the Peace of Effingham Preceinct, holding the office until 1860. In 1861, he was nomonated by the Democrats for County Treasurer ad ex-official Collector, over G.W. Barcus. It seems there was some dissatisfaction, and the friends of Barcus finally succeeded in obtaining a new convention and this decided to leave the matter to a primary convention and this time Barcus was declared the nominee, thought he was a Republican, had always been and still continued to be after his nomination.

Mr. Fortney held many minor offices, such as Supervisor, Assessor and Collector of Douglas Township. He was always a Democrat in the full and better sense of the word, and you can always depend on him to take an active part in the campaign. At the time of his death, he was Police Magistrated, having been re-elected last spring. He had held the same office by election and re-election for 21 years. As such, he had always striven to mete out justice to the best of this interpretation of the law and he came to be feared by all the wrong doers who knew him. He was honest and conscientous in his office and gave general satisfaction.

Religiously, Mr. Fortney was a Methodist, being a member of that denomination when the class was first organized in Broughton.

He was a veteren of the Mexican War, haivng enlisted in 1847 in Captain Lee's company, of which he was orderly sargeant. He drew a pension from the government for his services in the war.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Loy Chapel, at which place he was converted 40 years before the funeral was preached by Rev. Shouse and the pall bearers were Mr. Tucker, Tom Reed, Mayor Burrell, J. E. Tedrick and Virgil Wood.

The house in which Mr. Fortney lived was the first one built in Effingham, of which two are now standing of those five. There were then no churches or shool houses, and where the city now stands was open prairie.
