From ancestry.com entry of Christina Schweisberger (cSchweisberger @earthlink.net):
John Bailey Hook moved to Cass Co., MO about 1840. (Said to be one of
the founding pioneers of Cass Co., MO) Became very wealthy and owned a
huge plantation. John B. had 13 children. Two died without children.
His son Thomas Madison had 7. Thomas' son Grover had 15, Robert's (the
source of these notes) mother being the youngest. Grover was 60 when
Robert's mother Lois was born, and died in 1956 when Lois was 17. John
B. Hook and Eliza Holms only had twochildren before she disappeared in
1848. Indications are that she divorced him and moved to Lynn Co. Kansas.
The other children were by his wife Paulina Elizabeth Cummings. John B.
Hook was known as Squire by his slaves. The name stuck and most people
knew him as Squire Hook. John B. Hook had the misfortune of homesteading
land on the Kansas border. It later became a war zone thateventually
lead to the Civil War. John Hook built a fine plantation. It is said by
his grandson Grover that John had planted hedge rows all around his
plantation so that he could have all the neighbors over to go steeple
chasing after foxes. This of course was before the abolishinist
decided to make Kansas afree state when it aquired statehood. Many
poor people who were ethusiastic about there beliefs about slavery
were sent to Kansas. Most didn't have the means to feed themselves
thru the hard Kansas winters and supported themselves onthe livestock
and belongings of there slave owning neighbors in Missouri. Since John
Hook's platation was right on the Kansas Missouri border he was caught
in the middle. When the Kansas started killing the plantation owners
families then the locals got together a Militia and so did the
Kansans. The Kansas militia became known as the Jayhawkers. Eventually
a man named William Clark Quantrill took over the Missouri Militia and
were later to become Quantrill's raiders. A story about Rutherford
Hook is recorded in a book called Freeman at 100. This book is a
history of the Freeman area of Cass Co. which is where JohnHook
lived. The story states that the confederate army was camped at
Morristown and the Union army came in early in the morning. Many Union
soldier's were killed. The confederates didn't lose a man in the battle.
After the battle,Rutherford Hook came into town, not knowing about the
battle. The confederates had moved on and the Union armey was still
there. Rutherford and 6 other confederate soldiers who also had come to
town were captured and made to dig there own graves. After the task was
done the Union soldiers killed all of themen except for
Rutherford and another confederate soldier named Davis. He waslet go to
tell the tale.
During the war the Missouri counties were burned under order no. 11.
Both John B. Hook and his brother James lost their farms and all of
their worldly possesions. But after the war they had more money than
before the war. It is thought that their father gave them their
inheritance before he died seeing how they had lost everything.
Neither James Samuel or John B. were mentioned in their father's will.
Probably because their father Stephen had already given them their
inheritance.
John B. Hook is buried in theFreeman cemetary. It was
originally the Hook cemetary. John Hook's doctor
appearently told John he was going to die and ask him his full name
and his birth place.
Although he didn't mention who his parents were he did tell the doctor
he was born in Alleghany Va. and that his full name was John Bailey
Hook. His middle name so far as known appears no where else but on
this doctors report which is in the Cass Co. genealogy societies
library. John Bailey Hook also had a grandson named John Bailey thus
indicating this was his name.
The estate papers of Elias Hook, John's brother list all of
John Bailey Hook's children by name. Only one was left out. It simply
stated unknown child of John Hook. This child was Elizabeth Hook
Lower. Why she w (entry cut off)
p718 HISTORY OF CASS COUNTY 1917
(FROM ARTICLE UNDER JB HOOK)
J. B. Hook, an enterprising merchant at Jaudon, Missouri, is a native of Cass County, and belongs to one of its prominent pioneer families. He was born in 1874 and is a son of A. S. and Georgia Hook. The father now resides in this country and is one of the substantial citizens of Dolan township. He is a son of J. B. Hook, a native of Virginia, who settled in Cass County in 1844. He pre-empted one hundred and sixty acres of government land and bought additional land, until at the time of his death in 1886, he owned fifteen hundred acres. He was an extensive cattle raiser and dealer and during his time was one of the leading stockmen of the county. He had a large acquaintance and was known "Squire Hook”. Like many others, he met with considerable loss and suffered severe privations and hardships during the Civil War, and it is said that at one time during that period he lived on potatoes for six weeks.
