From ancestry.com entry of Christina Schweisberger (cSchweisberger @earthlink.net):
John Bailey Hook moved to Cass Co., MO about 1840. (Said to be one of
the founding pioneers of Cass Co., MO) Became very wealthy and owned a
huge plantation. John B. had 13 children. Two died without children.
His son Thomas Madison had 7. Thomas' son Grover had 15, Robert's (the
source of these notes) mother being the youngest. Grover was 60 when
Robert's mother Lois was born, and died in 1956 when Lois was 17. John
B. Hook and Eliza Holms only had twochildren before she disappeared in
1848. Indications are that she divorced him and moved to Lynn Co. Kansas.
The other children were by his wife Paulina Elizabeth Cummings. John B.
Hook was known as Squire by his slaves. The name stuck and most people
knew him as Squire Hook. John B. Hook had the misfortune of homesteading
land on the Kansas border. It later became a war zone thateventually
lead to the Civil War. John Hook built a fine plantation. It is said by
his grandson Grover that John had planted hedge rows all around his
plantation so that he could have all the neighbors over to go steeple
chasing after foxes. This of course was before the abolishinist
decided to make Kansas afree state when it aquired statehood. Many
poor people who were ethusiastic about there beliefs about slavery
were sent to Kansas. Most didn't have the means to feed themselves
thru the hard Kansas winters and supported themselves onthe livestock
and belongings of there slave owning neighbors in Missouri. Since John
Hook's platation was right on the Kansas Missouri border he was caught
in the middle. When the Kansas started killing the plantation owners
families then the locals got together a Militia and so did the
Kansans. The Kansas militia became known as the Jayhawkers. Eventually
a man named William Clark Quantrill took over the Missouri Militia and
were later to become Quantrill's raiders. A story about Rutherford
Hook is recorded in a book called Freeman at 100. This book is a
history of the Freeman area of Cass Co. which is where JohnHook
lived. The story states that the confederate army was camped at
Morristown and the Union army came in early in the morning. Many Union
soldier's were killed. The confederates didn't lose a man in the battle.
After the battle,Rutherford Hook came into town, not knowing about the
battle. The confederates had moved on and the Union armey was still
there. Rutherford and 6 other confederate soldiers who also had come to
town were captured and made to dig there own graves. After the task was
done the Union soldiers killed all of themen except for
Rutherford and another confederate soldier named Davis. He waslet go to
tell the tale.
During the war the Missouri counties were burned under order no. 11.
Both John B. Hook and his brother James lost their farms and all of
their worldly possesions. But after the war they had more money than
before the war. It is thought that their father gave them their
inheritance before he died seeing how they had lost everything.
Neither James Samuel or John B. were mentioned in their father's will.
Probably because their father Stephen had already given them their
inheritance.
John B. Hook is buried in theFreeman cemetary. It was
originally the Hook cemetary. John Hook's doctor
appearently told John he was going to die and ask him his full name
and his birth place.
Although he didn't mention who his parents were he did tell the doctor
he was born in Alleghany Va. and that his full name was John Bailey
Hook. His middle name so far as known appears no where else but on
this doctors report which is in the Cass Co. genealogy societies
library. John Bailey Hook also had a grandson named John Bailey thus
indicating this was his name.
The estate papers of Elias Hook, John's brother list all of
John Bailey Hook's children by name. Only one was left out. It simply
stated unknown child of John Hook. This child was Elizabeth Hook
Lower. Why she w (entry cut off)

p718 HISTORY OF CASS COUNTY 1917
(FROM ARTICLE UNDER JB HOOK)
J. B. Hook, an enterprising merchant at Jaudon, Missouri, is a native of Cass County, and belongs to one of its prominent pioneer families. He was born in 1874 and is a son of A. S. and Georgia Hook. The father now resides in this country and is one of the substantial citizens of Dolan township. He is a son of J. B. Hook, a native of Virginia, who settled in Cass County in 1844. He pre-empted one hundred and sixty acres of government land and bought additional land, until at the time of his death in 1886, he owned fifteen hundred acres. He was an extensive cattle raiser and dealer and during his time was one of the leading stockmen of the county. He had a large acquaintance and was known "Squire Hook”. Like many others, he met with considerable loss and suffered severe privations and hardships during the Civil War, and it is said that at one time during that period he lived on potatoes for six weeks.

General Notes: Husband - Blain L Davidson

I have placed Blain here, as son of this James as a placeholder. Blain was in Sullivan/Carter County, TN at the same time. (Blain Davidson provided surety to James Davidson and Elender Garland marriage in 16 Jun 1798 in Carter Co, TN ) Later he and 'brother' Samuel appear in Grainger County, TN. Samuel could have been a brother or an uncle, but probably not his father as the ages don't seem to fit.

CUNNINGHAM-DAVIDSON CONNECTION

Davidson Family
Four groups of Davidson were living in Grainger Co., TN early in the 1800's. Samuel lived on the south side of the Holston River which is now in Hamblen County, TN. David and his sons (Bryan, Robert, and William) on Bull Run Creek, west of Copper Ridge (Grainger Co., TN Deed Bk. A, p. 324; Deed Bk. D, p. 81; p. 95; Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions, No. 3, 1812-1818; 1804, 1805, 1810, and 1821 Tax Lists). John and Edward lived on Flat Creek on Copper Ridge (Grainger Co., TN Deed Bk. D, p. 393; Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions, No, 1812-1816; 1799, 1804, and 1810 Tax Listp). Golden lived on the south side of the Clinch River at the mouth of Cave Spring (Grainger Co., TN Deed Book B, p. 210; 1805 Tax List). In addition, there was in Jefferson Co., TN a little earlier, a James Davidson who left a will in 1800 naming Alexander, James, Richard, Joseph, William, and Jacob as his sons (Tennessee Cousins, by W. S. Ray, 1980, p. 102). In 1800, Jefferson County appears to have included the south side of the Holston River where Samuel lived but was taxed by Grainger County. It is very possible that these families were related.

As discussed earlier, it is believed that Samuel was the father of Blair. From Grainger County records and from the close proximity to which certain Davidsons were living in Overton Co., TN in 1820, Samuel may have also been the father of an Abner, Asa, and Francis Davidson (Grainger County Marriages, 1796-1837, by B. R. Whitley, 1982; 1820 Federal Census for Overton, TN).
Blair Davidson (projected son of Samuel) and Dorcas Cunningham were married in 1800, yet the only further trace of them prior to the 1820 census were references to Dorcas found in the minutes of the Big Spring Baptist Church (Bulletin of the Watauga Association of Genealogists, Vol.. 3-5). In March 1804, Dorcas Davidson was received to membership by letter, and in October 1815 she was dismissed by letter. She was received again by letter in October 1817 but no record of subsequent dismissal was noted. The 1820 Federal Census lists Blair "R." Davidson as living in Warren Co., TN very close to John and H. (Harvey) Cunningham. Blair's family at that time consisted of Blair, his wife, three sons, and four daughters.

The 1830 Federal Census lists Blair and his family (a wife, one son, and two daughters) as living in Orange Co., IN. At that time, two of his sons, James and John, were heads of their own households. By 1835, Blair, James, and John were living in Fayette Co., IL close to Nancy Cunningham, Harvey Cunningham's wife (1835 Illinois State Census). On 21 August 1838, Blair "L." Davidson received a patent for 40 acres of land in Section 32 in what is now South Hurricane Township (1847 Tax Assesor's Book, copied by Mrs. Gene Harris, Fayette County Genealogical Society).

At least three sons and possibly one daughter of Blair can be identified. The sons were James, John, and Nicholas, and the daughter was Mary. James and John were heads of separate households in close proximity to Blair's in the 1830 Federal Census for Orange Co., IN in the 1835 Illinois State Census for Fayette County. Furthermore, the age ranges for James and John match those listed for the two oldest male children in Blair's household in the 1820 Federal Census for Warren C., TN. On 7 July 1851, a Nicholas Davidson made a noncupative will which stated that "his sister Polly Davidson should have his horse and that her son William Davidson and the balance of her children should have the balance of his property to be divided equally amongst them" (Montgomery Co., IL Estate Records, Bk. 8, p. 17). Although the will was filed in Montgomery County, the 1850 Federal census list* a Nicholas Davidson, a carpenter 25 years of age, living alone either in, or close to, what is now South Hurricane Township. Living in the same general area was a household consisting of a Mary Davidson (42 and born in TN), a William (21 and born in TN), a Martha A. (18 and born in IN), and a Catherine (10 and born in IL). Mary and the others in this household fit the age categories of individuals that appear in Blair's household in the 1840 Federal Census. Furthermore, the 1835 Illinois State Census lists in Blair's household a male in the age category that Nicholas would occupy. Mary could have been either a widowed daughter of Blair who married a Davidson, a widowed daughter-in-law, or an unmarried mother. Martha A. (Ann) Davidson married James F. Hinton on 16 November 1854, and a William Davidson married Mary Bolyard on 27 April 1857 (Fayette County Illinois Marriage Record 1821-1877, by Alenia McCord, Fayette County Genealogical Society, 1983).

From Tennessee, Indiana, and Illinois census information, Blair had been born between 1770 and 1775, whereas Dorcas had been born between 1775 and 1780. Dorcas died sometime between 1835 and 1840 since she was not listed in the latter census. These conclusions, of course, are dependent on the assumption that Dorcas was indeed the oldest female in Blair's household in these censuses. Blair does not appear in a census after 1840.

James H. Davidson (son of Blair) was born ca. 1800 (1860 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., IL). Since his parents were married in Grainger Co., TN in 1800, it is assumed that he was born in that locality. James first appears as head of household in the Orange Co., IN 1830 Federal Census. By 1835 (Illinois State Census), James was living in Fayette Co., IL with a wife and six children. In 1836, James purchased at the Vandalia Land Office 80 acres located in Section 5 of what became Shafter Twp. (Fayette Co., IL Deed Bk. D, pp. 150, 273). Section 5 is the next section south of the section that Blair was to purchase in 1838.

The identity and death date of James's first wife is unknown. He married at least three more times. On 29 May 1836, James married Sarah Murrell Prater, the widow of Bezel Prater who had died 1 July 1833 (Fayette Co., IL Marriage Records, Old Bk. A, p. 10; Fayette Facts, Vol. IV, No. 1, p 98). James was appointed guardian of the children of Bazel and Sarah (Fayette Facts, Vol. X, No. 3, p. 39). Their marriage, however, was short lived. Sarah died in July of 1839 at the age of 32 years and she was buried along side Bezel in the Lawler Cemetary, north of Vandalia (Fayette Facts, Vol. IV, No. 1, p.98).
James married Jerussa Morris on 11 November 1841 and Elisabeth Donaldson on 18 July 1847 (MontgomeryCounty, ILL Marriage Record, 1821-1850, transcribed by Margaret Rambo, et al., Montgomery Co., IL Genealogical Society, Litchfield, IL). Nothing is known about Jerussa except that she must have died before James married Elizabeth and that she may have been the mother of one of James's children. No record of her has been found other than the marriage record.

Elizabeth Donaldson, who as a widow of a Moore, married Samuel Donaldson in Washington Co., IL on 8 December 1836. She had been born in Pee Dee district of South Carolina in 1801 and had a five year old son when she married Samuel Donaldson. Samuel was the son of Thomas Donaldson (Fayette Facts a, Vol. RI, No. 3, pp. 68-89). The I850 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., IL listed Elizabeth Davidson as a head of household with Jesse Moore age 19 born in IL, Mary Donaldson age 14 born in IL, Robert age 10 born in IL, and Samuel age 8 born in IL. James was not listed. Elizabeth has not been identified in any subsequent census.

James Davidson has not been identified in the 1840 or 1850 Federal Census for Illinois or the 1855 Illinois State Census for Montgomery and Fayette Counties. The 1860 Federal Census for Hurricane Twp., Montgomery Co., IL lists James as a head of household age 60, Thomas age 22 born in IL, and Nicholas age 14 born in IL.

James died on 26 August 1875 (Montgomery Co., IL Estate Records, Bk. E, p. 20). According to a recorded deposition, James was survived by seven children - Thomas, Nicholas W., and Nancy A.Davidson of Montgomery County; Allen of Fayette County; Polly Watkins of Shelby County; and Eli and Robert of Sangamon County. In a noncupative will delivered to Levi Davidson and John Osborne, James left all his personal property to Nicholas W. A J.T. Alexander was appointed Administrator of the estate. No mention is made of a surviving wife.

From Federal Census records, Polly Davidson Watkins was born in 1827 in Indiana, Allen was born in 1830 in Indiana, Thomas was born in 1838 in Illinois, and Nicholas W. was born in 1846 in Illinois. The birth dates and places for Nancy A., Eli, and Robert are unknown. The 1835 State Census for Fayette County lists James's household with six children - four boys and two girls. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Allen, Eli, and Robert were three of the four sons, and Polly and Nancy A. were the two daughters. Their mother must have been James's first wife. Thomas's mother must have been Sarah Prater and Nicholas W's mother must have been Jerussa Morris.

A receipt for ten dollars, dated 23 October 1878, for a coffin for Nicholas Davidson was found in James's estate papers. Polly married William C. Watkins, son of Absalom C. Watkins, on 29 February 1844 (Montgomery Co IL Marriage Records 1821-1850, transcribed by Margaret Rambo, et al., Montgomery County Genealogical Society, Litchfield, IL). From census and family records their children were Henry born 26 March 1845, Emily born ea. 1849, James A. born 25 June 1852, Sarah born ca. 1855, and William Lafayette born 14 October 1860. Allen married Jenny Hinton on 2 August 1850 (Fayette Co., IL Marriage Records, Bk. Old A, p. 39). Their children were Levi born ca. 1851, Cassandra born ca. 1854, William R. born ca. 1855, Elizabeth born ca. 1857, James A. born ca. 1862, Samuel born ca. 1863, and Joseph W. born ca. 1866. The other four children of James have not been traced.

John Davidson (son of Blair) was born between 1805 and 1810 (1820 Federal Census for Warren Co., TN; 1830 Federal Census for Orange Co., IN; 1840 Federal Census for Fayette Co., IL; 1835 State Census for Fayette Co., IL). His birth place is unknown. He first appears as a head of household in the 1830 census for Orange Co., IN.

By 1835, John and his family were in Fayette County. It may have been this John Davidson who, on 26 March 1840, purchased 40 acres located in Section 13 of what became Otego Township (Federal Land Office Records, Illinois State Archives).

John married Elizabeth (Betsy) Spencer (1878 Historyof Fayette Co., IL, p. 739). They had at least seven children: George W. born 1828 in IN, Nancy M. born 1838 in IL, James born 1840 in IL, Sidney born 1844 in IL, Henry C. born 1849 in IL, and two unidentified girls who were born between 1830 and 1835 but were not in John's household in the 1850 census (1840 and 1850 Federal Censuses for Fayette Co., IL).

A biographical sketch of John and Elisabeth's son, Henry C., is found in the 1878 History of Fayette County Illinois. According to the sketch, Henry C. was born in Sharon Township and that he was only five years of age when his father died. His mother died a year later. After his mother died, the family was broken up and Henry C. was raised by Harry Hinton of Hurricane Township. Inasmuch as Elizabeth was listed as the head-of-household in the 1855 State Census, John and Elizabeth must have died sometime between 1854 and 1856.
