In Loving Memory of
Edith Marie Christensen
Born: Iola, Kansas May 17,1904
Passed Away: Culver City, California July 26, 1999
Laid to Rest: Inglewood Park Cemetery, Los Angeles California July 30, 1999
We celebrate the life of Edith Marie Christensen who was a very loving woman that held herself with such beauty, strength, courage and grace. She touched our lives so deeply and we pay tribute to this tiny, but strong woman that gave such love to us that she will remain in our hearts forever.
Edith was born May 17, 1904 to parents Thomas J. Davidson, Sr. and Lulu Messer-Davidson. She was the second of four children and was raised on a farm with her sisters Grace and Mary and brother James Jr. in Lawrence Kansas.
She led an incredible life that spanned nearly a century and was able to witness some of the world's largest triumphs and tragedies from two World Wars to the first man on the moon and saw 17 Presidents, from Teddy Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, serve their terms. In her youth, she strove to be independent getting her first job making lady's hats and going to school to be a beautician. She would take the train to Chicago with her girlfriends and see the sights of the big city. She had the ability to see beauty in all things, no matter how big or small.
She married William Brothers Christensen in 1928 and moved to Hollywood, California to start a family and a new life. They had two children, Shirley Anne Christensen-Wolfe and William Brothers Christensen, Jr. Although money was very scarce in those days, she always would work hard and save in order to have the finest for her family, rather than settle for less. She worked as a beautician on Hollywood Boulevard as well as privately in the homes of famous actors. She had many prestigious clients, including Bob Hope, Gene Autrey and Sydney Toler. Her children both became active in the studios as extras and Edith always loved to tell stories of those days and how she was able to meet such great actors as Harold Lloyd, Jimmy Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few.
Edith was quite the craftsman with her hands and made many beautiful things from her children's clothes to curtains, refinishing antiques, hand-braided area rugs and even upholstery for her furniture. One Christmas in the 30's she bought a Scarlet O'Hara doll for her daughter and because they could not afford to buy the accessories, Edith would stay up all night creating beautiful velvet gowns, coats, pajamas and pantsuits for the doll. Some of her greatest work, however, lies in her needlepoint "paintings". A lover of fine art she would take pictures of famous painters, such as Monet, out of books as well as make her own designs and have them transferred onto fabric screens and created the beautiful needlepoint "pictures" that she has all around her house today. Her work is so exquisite and she put much love and inspiration into everything she made.
During W.W.II, she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter", putting together the instrument panels on small fighter planes. Being a very petite but strong woman, just shy of 5', she could fit perfectly inside the cockpit beneath the instrument panels. Her coworkers nicknamed her "legs" because she would be headfirst inside the plane with only her legs sticking out.
After the war, she stayed home to raise her family. Edith and William, or "Pretty Mother" and "Daddy" as they would affectionately call each other, believed in quality, healthy living and always would feed their family healthy, natural foods even before healthy was "in".
She found her greatest triumph and joys in her family and watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. After the death of her husband in 1971, she devoted her life to her family. She was involved in every aspect of their lives, becoming the "cement" that held the family together even through the toughest times. She was always there to lend love, support and to help in times of need without hesitation or question. She taught values, respect and responsibility, from taking the bus to pick up her Grandson Scott and take him back to mow her lawn to sharing the accomplishments of her Grandson Bob in the US Navy and Grandson Richard's achievements in business. She would make dolls and dresses for her Granddaughter Christine and many New Years' were spent at her house watching Dick Clark, eating See's Candies. She would organize weekend family outings and frequent trips to the Farmers Market, where she made many friends.
Even with all the technological advancements and conveniences that came to be, Edith remained old-fashioned in many ways. She insisted on using a washboard to do her laundry until arthritis set into her shoulders and she finally consented to a washer and dryer as well as learning to drive a car instead of taking the bus.
Edith was a lover of fine art, literature, opera and life itself. Even though she outlived her sisters and brother, she kept in close contact with their children and their children's children. She had a deep interest in her family history and would frequently speak with relatives to exchange stories and gain knowledge of her roots.
Even though later on, her arthritis began to slow her down and her eyesight was failing, her eyes shined brightly with her strength to overcome her physical failings. Her love never ceased to shine through and her smile was always genuine. She always would remain loving, cheerful and humorous no matter what was hurting her, even up until the end.
Edith departed this full life on the 26th day of July 1999 at 3:30 a.m. She is the most incredible, loving, intelligent woman that we will ever know and her wonderful laugh, smile and most of all, her love, will remain in our hearts forever.
Edith Marie Christensen leaves behind to carry on her legacy of love in the hearts of her children; Shirley Ann Christensen-Wolfe, Richard Allen Wolfe, Sr. and William Brothers Christensen, Jr. Her grandchildren; Richard Clark Childress, Robert Wayne Childress, Scott Dennis Childress and Christine Marie Childress-Gordon. Her Great Grandchildren; Nathaniel Richard Childress, Travis Clark Childress, Andrew Wayne Childress. Also nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces as well as her many other relatives and dear friends.
You have touched our lives forever and are now our Guardian Angel.
God Bless You Grandma
"Fill Not Your Hearts..."
Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow,
but remember me in every tomorrow.
Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles.
I've only gone to rest a little while.
Although my leaving causes pain and grief,
my going has eased my hurt and given me relief.
So dry your eyes and remember me,
not as I am now, but as I used to be.
Because, I will remember you all and look on with a smile.
Understand in your hearts, I've gone to rest a little while.
As long as I have the love of each of you.
I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.
