Even in his sickest days, Gordon Davidson worried about his work.He didn't want to leave anything unfinished because what he did affected people like him, people with disabilities.
"He still clung to the hope that he might be able to return to work," said Karen Michalski-Karney, executive director of the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, where Davidson had been the director of community services for almost 10 years. Davidson, who had multiple sclerosis, worked until about a month ago, when he discovered he had advanced renal cancer. Doctors told him he had a few weeks to live. He died Thursday at the age of 58.Although the days passed quickly, there was still enough time for friends and family to say goodbye.
"These last several weeks have been a real gift," said Pat Davidson, Gordon Davidson's ex-wife and best friend of 25 years. "What was so lovely was that so many of us don't realize the impact we had . . . but he knew the difference he made."
Davidson was born in Williamson, W.Va., and graduated from East Tennessee State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications with a minor in social work.
Before joining the Roanoke-based center, Davidson was an intake specialist at the Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired. He also worked as an assistant news director at radio station WSVA in Harrisonburg and as an adult protective services worker with Roanoke's Department of Social Services.Gordon Davidson was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988, Pat Davidson said. He walked with a cane but needed no further support.
"He was extremely proud of the fact that he was independent," Michalski-Karney said. "He was interested in assuring every person with a disability had the opportunity to be as independent as they could be." She added that at the center, Davidson was responsible for various duties, including producing the quarterly newsletters, leading sensitivity training classes and reviewing places for handicap accessibility. He always thought his job at the center was "made specifically for him," Michalski-Karney said, because it combined his interest in social work and helping people with disabilities.Davidson also was involved in numerous community organizations, including the Roanoke City Manager's Task Force on Community Relations and the Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities. In the past month, he received cards, letters and visits from dozens of people."He was a very good man," Pat Davidson said. "He said, 'It's been a good life.' "Gordon Davidson is survived by his mother, Almedia Davidson. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Williamson Road Church of the Brethren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the church, the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center or the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

Grace E. Derbyshire, 87, a resident of Mays for over 60 years, died at 8 a.m. Friday in the Rush Memorial Hospital
Born February 5, 1895 in Laurel, she was the daughter of Joe and Stella Crowdy [Croddy] Davison. She was married to Leonard Derbyshire who died January 16, 1979.[headstone says Jan 17, 1968]
She was a member of the Center Christian Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles J. Derbyshire of New Castle; one foster daughter, Mrs. Eldon R. (Marjorie) Helm of Muncie; one sister, Mary Davison of Brookville; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Moster and Sons Mortuary in Rushville. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery.
